FUSPro, NSSF, Equity Bank and Wandaz Launch National Salon Empowerment Tour in Namungoona

NAMUNGOONA, KAMPALA – Hundreds of salon operators, hairstylists, barbers, beauticians, makeup artists and beauty entrepreneurs gathered at the Orthodox Playground in Namungoona on Monday as the Federation of Uganda Salons and Beauty Professionals (FUSPro), together with the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), Equity Bank and Wandaz Products Limited, officially launched a nationwide salon empowerment and financial inclusion campaign.

The event marked the beginning of a countrywide tour aimed at transforming Uganda's beauty industry through financial literacy, savings mobilization, skills development, SACCO strengthening and business formalization. Hosted by FUSPro Public Relations Officer Mr. Jjuuko Abubakali, who served as the Master of Ceremonies, the launch attracted beauty professionals from across Rubaga Division and surrounding areas eager to learn about opportunities that can help them build sustainable businesses and improve their livelihoods. FUSPro Highlights Government Support for Salon Operators Speaking at the event, FUSPro President Mr. Kamanyire Celestine outlined the federation's ongoing efforts to organize and strengthen Uganda's beauty sector through professional representation, training and economic empowerment initiatives. Mr. Kamanyire provided an update regarding the financial support pledged by the Government of Uganda to salon operators through organized SACCO structures.

He emphasized the importance of registration, accountability and active participation in recognized SACCOs to ensure members are well-positioned to benefit from future government empowerment programmes. "The beauty industry employs thousands of Ugandans and contributes significantly to household incomes. Through FUSPro, we are working to ensure that salon operators become more organized, financially empowered and better represented," he said. During the event, FUSPro officials conducted verification exercises for several SACCOs operating within Rubaga Division. The verification process is intended to strengthen membership records and prepare participating groups for future opportunities and support programmes.

NSSF Brings the Vva Mu Zigo Campaign to Beauty Professionals A major highlight of the day was the participation of NSSF under its popular Vva Mu Zigo campaign, an initiative designed to encourage Ugandans working in the informal sector to embrace long-term saving and financial security. Representing NSSF, Madam Teddy educated attendees on the importance of retirement planning, emergency savings and financial discipline. She introduced participants to NSSF SmartLife Flexi, a voluntary savings solution that allows self-employed individuals and informal workers to save at their own pace. Beauty professionals were guided through the registration process, with many opening SmartLife Flexi accounts on-site. The initiative was widely welcomed by salon operators, many of whom acknowledged the challenges of working without structured retirement plans despite spending years in business. Equity Bank Promotes Financial Inclusion and Business Banking To complement the financial empowerment drive, Equity Bank provided banking services directly at the venue, helping salon owners and beauty entrepreneurs open personal and business accounts. The bank's representatives educated participants on the importance of formal banking, record keeping and building a financial profile that can support access to loans, credit facilities and other business development opportunities. The account-opening exercise was particularly beneficial to operators seeking to strengthen their financial management systems and prepare for future investment opportunities. Wandaz Demonstrates Modern Beauty Industry Practices The event also featured practical product demonstrations by Wandaz Products Limited, led by Mr. David Nyamutare. Mr. Nyamutare shared professional guidance on the proper handling and mixing of shampoos, hair treatment products and salon chemicals. Participants received practical tips on reducing product wastage, improving service quality and ensuring client safety when working with chemical-based beauty products.

He further encouraged salon operators to embrace quality-assured products and adopt professional standards that enhance customer satisfaction and business growth. The demonstrations attracted significant interest from salon professionals seeking affordable and effective ways to improve service delivery while increasing profitability. Building a Stronger Beauty Industry The launch reflected a growing commitment among stakeholders to professionalize Uganda's beauty sector by connecting salon operators to financial services, social security, skills development and organized representation. For many participants, the event provided a unique opportunity to access multiple services in one location, including SACCO verification, SmartLife Flexi registration, bank account opening and professional product training. Industry leaders expressed optimism that the nationwide tour will strengthen the capacity of salon operators across Uganda while promoting financial inclusion and sustainable business growth.

The Road Ahead Following the successful launch in Namungoona, FUSPro and its partners are expected to roll out similar engagements in other districts across Uganda. The initiative is expected to reach thousands of beauty professionals, helping them access financial services, strengthen their businesses and contribute more effectively to Uganda's growing economy. As the beauty and wellness sector continues to expand, stakeholders believe that partnerships between industry associations, financial institutions and private sector players will play a critical role in unlocking opportunities for salon operators and creating a more organized, resilient and prosperous industry.
